My Own Personal Takes on Hostel Etiquette

June 21, 2024 | The Flying Wren
Advice

You can fight me on them, it is just what I think

  • On general noise –  basically striking a balance between keeping a lil quiet and also understanding there will always be noise and you can’t be mad about it
    • Bring ear plugs and an eye cover – hostels are shared and thus some noise and light is 100% expected
    • Time spent in the bunk room should be quiet enough to be respectful to nappers; if you wanna chat just use the common areas. Not like a hard rule but is obviously just nicer
  • Don’t use grocery bags to organize clothes bc they are soooo loud
  • Don’t leave your stuff all over the place
  • Don’t hang your wet clothes above other people’s stuff or beds
  • On drunk people
    • Sober sleepers – drunk people coming and going are a given. Don’t get mad at them if they’re a little noisy bc you should have brought ear plugs.
    • Drunk partiers – do not turn on lights, do not puke, make sure to prep before your night out by leaving out your toiletries and pajamas ready so you cause the least disturbance possible, also pls just remember your bunk # and room key
  • Look out for each other in bar crawls lol
  • Don’t do anything more than make out pls for the love of god
  • Slightly hotter hot takes:
    • If you have to wake up between 2 and 6am for a flight, please for everyone’s sake get a private room the night before or pack super well and have a super silent alarm to get up
    • If you’ve been told all your life that you’re a super loud snorer, a 12 person hostel bunk room is not for you. You will do the opposite of make friends. I get it isn’t your fault you snore but also don’t punish everyone
  • If you are in a group and you take up all the bunks except one or two, just be nice to the solo people bc you’re honestly ruining the social vibe and opportunities by being exclusive

Bonus: Things to Look for When Booking a Hostel

  • Privacy curtains
  • Bare minimum more than 1 toilet stall and shower per room
  • 8+ rating on HostelWorld
  • A solid hangout area
  • A bar or resto downstairs is the best
  • Plenty of floor or locker space for bags
  • 24 hour reception

I hope this helps! For more happy tings, check out this trip prep guide 🙂

Disclaimer! This site is so incredibly anecdotal. I am writing only about what I have done and seen and think and I guess what I think I think and feel. If you had a different experience or pov, write your own blog. But yeah take everything with a grain of salt obviously! It’s not that serious, plus I am gonna be posting drafts that can always be edited, not the final word on life
